About Theo Klassen

Theo was born in Cape Town. He started playing guitar at age 12, and made the switch to bass at age 16. Together with his drummer brother David, Theo moved to Johannesburg in 1988 where they started playing for a few Christian bands namely, Reborn, Excellence for Christ and Heart Sout and Spirit. It was after working with popular artist Louis Brits that the brothers started working more professionally, mostly in the Afrikaans music scene.

 

Besides numerous tours, both locally and abroad, he has also done some TV work which includes programmes like Sweep Slag, Dis Hoe dit is met Steve, Kom 'n Bietjie Binne, Gospel Gold, Crescendo, Noot vir Noot, Die Kontrak and an episode of Stricly Come Dancing, performing with some of South Africa's biggest names in the business. Some of which include Johny Clegg, Karen Zoid, Dozi, Kurt Darren, Theuns Jordaan, Ruhan du Toit, Laurika Rouch, Brandon October, Anton Goosen, Rina Hugo, Nicolas Louw, Soweto String Quartet, Sonja Herold, Herman van den Berg, Vusi Mahlasela, Bok van Blerk, Mean Mr Mustard, Chris Chameleon, Coennie de Villiers, Blackie Swart, Amanda Strydom, Nianell, Jannie Moolman, Anton Botha, Gloria Bosman, Vicky Sampson, Heinz Winckler, Arno Jordaan, Jennifer Jones and many more. He can also be seen on live DVD recordings of Dozi, Blackie Swart,  Nianell and Dozi's duets DVD, 3 of Rhema's live recordings and Nianell's "Sand en Water" DVD.

 

Other highlights include a sold-out Royal Albert Hall show in London with Dozi, Steve Hofmeyr, Nianell, Laurika Rouch and Lucas Maree. He also formed part of the very successful Eagles Tribute band.

Some other names he has worked with includes Andre Crouch (USA), Heintje Simons (Belgium), Phil Driscoll (USA), Jonathan Butler (USA), Darlene Zschech (Australia). Forming part of the Laussanne 2010 Congress International Band.

He has recorded a few tracks with DJ Cleo for his (2013) album. He was bassist for Steve Hofmeyr and Juanita du Plessis show at Carnival City (2014). Theo has done 2 kiddie's albums and DVD's with Sonja Harold, as a voice over artist playing a character called "Tjokker". Theo also co-wrote the script for this character. He has also recorded a live show with Sonja during Lock down playing guitar and bass as well as backing vocals. On the 1st of July 2011, he was featured on a national radio station called "RSG" demonstrating and talking about the bass guitar.

 

Theo is currently bassist for Riana Nel, Justin Serrao band and Stiaan Reynierse. He also performs regularly at the very popular Signature Restaurant in Morningside, Bryanston Country Club, Lakeside Bistro and Fourways Gardens Clubhouse either on solo guitar, or as a duo with different vocalists and other musicians. Theo has been the bassist and assistant music director for the Little Falls Christian Centre band, since 2006.

 

Theo often does various workshops which includes talking about his love for bass, and sharing his knowledge with regards to Worship Teams.

 

Since 2013 he's been teaching bass, acoustic and electric guitars as well as music production at St Stithians College, where he also heads up a Prep-, and 2 College Rock Bands.
